The Care Sector Doesn't Have a Recruitment Crisis. It Has a Retention Crisis...

Every week, we hear the same thing.

"We just can't find good people."

But here's the question...

If there aren't any good candidates, why do some care providers consistently attract and retain them?

The truth is, the health and social care sector isn't just struggling to recruit.

It's struggling to keep the talented people it already has.

Recruitment Isn't the Root Cause

Yes, there are workforce shortages.

Yes, competition for experienced professionals is fierce.

But if your service is replacing the same role every six or twelve months, the vacancy itself probably isn't the problem.

It's what happens after someone joins.

People don't accept a role hoping to leave six months later.

They leave because expectations don't match reality.

They leave because they're exhausted.

They leave because they don't feel supported.

They leave because they stop believing they can do their best work.

The Best Candidates Have a Choice

Experienced Registered Managers.

Deputy Managers.

Care Coordinators.

Support Workers.

Senior Carers.

They're all in demand.

And the best candidates aren't just asking about salary anymore.

They're asking:

  • What's the culture like?

  • How long has the current team been together?

  • How do you support wellbeing?

  • Will I have opportunities to develop?

  • Why did the last person leave?

Because they're not just looking for another job.

They're looking for somewhere they can build a career.

Recruitment Can Only Do So Much

Even the strongest recruitment strategy can't compensate for poor onboarding, inconsistent leadership or a culture where people don't feel valued.

A brilliant hire placed into the wrong environment won't stay brilliant for long.

That's why recruitment shouldn't be viewed as a sticking plaster.

It should be part of a wider strategy focused on attracting, developing and retaining great people.

The Real Question

Instead of asking:

"Why can't we recruit?"

Perhaps more providers should be asking:

"Why aren't people staying?"

Because the answer to that question often unlocks the solution to the first.

At OakGar Recruitment, we don't just match CVs to vacancies. We work with providers to understand their culture, leadership and long-term goals, helping them recruit people who are far more likely to stay, grow and make a lasting difference.

After all, outstanding care isn't built on constantly replacing staff.

It's built on keeping the right people.
